On Aug. 5, Warner Bros released The Suicide Squad simultaneously in theaters and on HBO Max for free to subscribers. The film was met with praise by audiences and critics alike. However, the movie only garnered a disappointing $26.5 million during its opening weekend, falling far short of expected box office predictions. To date, the film has grossed $52,779,000 domestically and $144,879,000 worldwide.
While the numbers may seem low, in these pandemic times it can be considered somewhat a success. The Suicide Squad is currently ranked #12 overall in gross domestic box office numbers for 2021. (For comparison, Black Widow is ranked #1 with $181,531,407.) Of course, these numbers do not account for the numerous times the movie has been viewed on HBO Max (which, had this been pre-pandemic times with the movie only being released in theaters, could theoretically have meant millions of dollars for the studio).
Written and directed by Gunn, The Suicide Squad brings back Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. Rounding off the Task Force X team are John Cena as Peacemaker, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, and Sylvester Stallone voicing King Shark.
Don’t miss out on the fun and be sure to join the Twitter party tonight!
