What time is it? It’s Adventure Time! While it has only been a few years since Cartoon Network‘s already iconic animated series Adventure Time came to an end, fans have been ravenous for more! Thankfully the team at HBO Max is ready to give it to them.

HBO Max has just announced that they have given a straight-to-series order for an all-new Adventure Time spinoff show that will shift the focus from Finn and Jake to their female fan-fic counterparts, Fionna and Cake! The series, which has been given the working title Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake, is going to be an adult-oriented animated series a little closer to something you might find on Adult Swim. As the working title implies, the show will follow Fionna (who herself is the female equivalent of Finn from the original series) and her best friend, the magical talking cat named Cake!

Don’t expect more of the same old show this time around, as the official synopsis of the series implies that things will be much larger in scope in Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake. The synopsis reads:

Fionna and Cake — with the help of the former Ice King, Simon Petrikov — embark on a multiverse-hopping adventure and journey of self-discovery. All the while a powerful new antagonist, determined to track them down and erase them from existence, lurks in the shadows.

The original Adventure Time show premiered back in 2010 and ran until 2018. The show followed the adventures of teenage boy Finn The Human and his magical best friend Jake The Dog. During its 10-season run, the show won multiple Primetime Emmys, BAFTA Children’s Awards, Annie Awards, BTVA Awards, and a Peabody Award among others.

The show would go on to spawn four one-hour specials for the HBO Max streaming service, the last of which, Wizard City, is set to premiere this fall. The popularity of these specials on HBO Max likely led to the development of this spin-off show. Billy Wee, HBO Max’s Senior VP of Comedy and Original Animation, said in a statement:

Adventure Time truly broke the mold and earned legions of passionate fans in the process. We are thrilled to partner with our friends at Cartoon Network Studios to continue innovating and expanding the Adventure Time universe with this world class team.

Fionna and Cake originated in the classic Adventure Time series but were part of an alternative version that existed in a fan-fic that was written by The Ice King (with contributions from Lumpy Space Princess, of course). The world they come from featured not just gender-swapped versions of Finn and Jake, but all your favorite characters from the Land Of Ooo, including Prince Gumball (Princess Bubblegum), The Ice Queen (Ice King), and Marshall Lee (Marceline).

Sam Register, President, Warner Bros. Animation and Cartoon Network Studios expressed his excitement in seeing the Adventure Time legacy continuing, saying:

Adventure Time broke boundaries and was a shining example of how impactful animated storytelling can be. We are excited to partner with HBO Max to carry that tradition on to new heights, lands and magical worlds.

Currently, there is no official timeline as to when we can expect to see Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake hitting the HBO Max streaming service. While not included in the announcement, it is expected that both Madeleine Martin and Roz Ryan will be returning to voice Fionna and Cake respectively.
