The Far Cry video game series has been one of the hottest franchises in the gaming industry since it first launched back in 2004. Fans of the first-person shooter survival adventure franchise will be very excited to hear that Netflix is planning not one, but two all-new anime series based on the brand!

Netflix recently announced a title and several details for one of the series, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix. The show will be an adult animated series spinning off from Far Cry 3‘s Blood Dragon expansion. Blood Dragon featured Sergeant Rex ‘Power’ Colt (who was portrayed both in design and in voicework by 80s action star Michael Biehn) in an over-the-top celebration of 1980s action-packed B-movies.

Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, which is created and executive produced by Adi Shankar (who championed Netflix’s recently wrapped Castlevania series), is set to run for six episodes from the animation studio Bobbypills. In addition to Shanker, Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix is also being produced by Ubisoft’s Hélène Juguet, Hugo Revon, and Gérard Guillemot.

The Blood Dragon series will be presenting a loving send-up of 1990s action flicks and feature alter egos of several fan-favorite Ubisoft characters. Adi Shankar divulged some story details for the show at the recent Netflix Geeked Week event. He stated the story will be set in a parallel universe where the majority of the citizens of the world are unemployed thanks to the rise of automated labor back in the 1950s. The world’s largest tech company, Eden, offers basic income support while also manipulating the world’s population in various ways. The show’s lead character, Captain Dolph Laserhawk, is a cybernetically enhanced soldier in the Eden army that is planning a big heist so that he and his boyfriend can escape once and for all.

Netflix has not yet set a premiere date for the series, although more information is expected to be released soon as some test animation footage has already leaked out, which you can see below.

The Far Cry video games series has sold more than 60-million units to date. The next game in the franchise, titled Far Cry 6, is scheduled for release this October and will feature The Mandalorian star Giancarlo Esposito as the lead villain.

Details for the second Far Cry anime series that Netflix is developing are all but nonexistent. There is no information as to which game in the franchise the series will follow (and the story of each game varies immensely between titles with no real recurring characters, locations, or plots). For now, all we know is that Netflix is planning something else for the Far Cry brand.

These new anime series are not the first time Far Cry has been adapted in other media, as a live-action film was released back in 2008 by the oft-maligned director Uwe Boll. Netflix and Ubisoft have a number of projects in development with one another, including a Splinter Cell animated series, and a live-action series based on the Assassin’s Creed brand.
