As it prepares to head into its fourth season, Netflix is set to close the book on their animated Castlevania series. Season 4 of the series, which will premiere on the streaming service on May 13, 2021, is now set to be the show’s last.

Based on the classic video game franchise of the same name from Konami, Deadline is reporting that even though Castlevania is coming to an end, the world that is built may yet live on as Netflix is looking into a new animated series set in the same universe that would follow an entirely new set of characters.

The series is an animated dark fantasy series that is heavily inspired by Ayami Kojima’s artwork from one of the franchise’s most iconic games, Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night. The story follows Trevor Belmont (Richard Armitage), the last of the disgraced Belmont bloodline. Trevor and his newfound allies are set to continue an ancient war against Vlad Dracula Tepes (Graham McTavish) and his vampire council to save Eastern Europe and humanity from certain extinction. The series also features voice work by Matt Frewer, Emily Swallow, Alejandro Reynoso, James Callis, and Tony Amendola.

Netflix’s Castlevania was created, written, and executive produced by comic book writer Warren Ellis. Comic book fans will recognize Ellis from major comic book projects like Transmetropolitan, RED, The Authority, Planetary, and Hellblazer. Ellis recently faced sexual misconduct allegations in the summer of 2020, which he has firmly denied. By the time the allegations came to light, he had already submitted his finished scripts for Season 4 of Castlevania. Ellis has had no further involvement with the series following these charges and is likely not involved creatively with the new show Netflix is looking into developing.

When it first kicked off in July 2017, Castlevania was the first original anime series to hit the Netflix subscription streaming service and quickly became a keystone in the development of Netflix’s original programming. The show was well-received by both viewers and critics alike, with fans of the game franchise embracing it fully. The show even garnered an IGN Award for Best Animated TV Series in 2018 for its second season.
