Following a batch of stills and a poster featuring Henry Golding as the enigmatic titular ninja, Paramount Pictures has now released the first trailer for the movie Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. The trailer debuted at the 2021 MTV Movie Awards amidst much anticipation from fans.

A lot is riding on this film as it is an attempt to enhance the G.I. Joe franchise and expand it into some new world-building – beginning with the origin story of Snake Eyes. It’s been 8 years since the last G.I. Joe film (2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation). While a sequel was in the works with a writers’ room in place, according to producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura it “really didn’t generate much for us. My opinion of that room was that never really worked very well, unfortunately.”

Was the wait worth it? From the action alone, one can say yes! But you can decide by checking out the trailer below:

“A tenacious loner is welcomed into an ancient Japanese clan called the Arashikage after saving the life of their heir apparent. Upon arrival in Japan, the Arashikage teach Snake Eyes the ways of the ninja warrior while also providing something he’s been longing for: a home. But, when secrets from his past are revealed, Snake Eyes’ honor and allegiance will be tested – even if that means losing the trust of those closest to him.”

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins was originally slated to release in March of 2020, but due to the pandemic, it was pushed back to October 2021. With theaters (and the world) now opening up, the studio has pushed up the release for a summer tentpole showing in July. As the release date nears, expect more to come out about this film.

Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins will be in theaters on July 23rd and stars Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians, A Simple Favor) as Snake Eyes, Andrew Koji (Bullet Train, Warrior) as Storm Shadow, Samara Weaving (Bill & Ted Face the Music, Hollywood) as Scarlett, Úrsula Corberó (Snatch, Money Heist) as Baroness, and Iko Uwais (Wu Assassins, Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens) as Hard Master. The movie is directed by Robert Schwentke (The Divergent Series: Insurgent, Allegiant).
