The cast of the next Indiana Jones film gained another star. Mads Mikkelsen (Doctor Strange, Hannibal) will co-star with Harrison Ford and the recently announced Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Solo: A Star Wars Story).
The project has been in development for some time. It sees James Mangold (Logan, Ford vs Ferrari) take over the director’s chair from Steven Spielberg. Spielberg will still produce alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, and Simon Emanuel. Legendary composer John Williams (Star Wars, Harry Potter), returns to score the film.
Indiana Jones gives Mikkelsen yet another major film franchise on his IMDB page. He has appeared in the 21st Century reimagining of James Bond as Le Chiffre in Casino Royale. In 2016, he starred opposite Benedict Cumberbatch as the evil sorcerer Kaecillus in Marvel’s Doctor Strange. He was the engineer behind the Death Star, Galen Erso, in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and will replace Johnny Depp as Grindelwald in the next Fantastic Beasts movie.
At this time there is not a lot know about the latest Indiana Jones film. It has been in constant development since Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull disappointed audiences in 2008. Officially announced by Disney in 2016 with Spielberg attached to direct, Indiana Jones 5 was to be in theaters in 2019. The film was then pushed back to 2020. Now expect to see it reach theaters in 2022.
The film begins shooting this summer, if all goes to plan. Casting is still in the works, and the script is being written by Mangold with Jez and John-Henry Butterworth. No word yet on whether Mikkelsen will be a friend or foe or if he will serve some other role in the story. Nor has there been any indication of what priceless historical artifact Jones and company will be searching for.
Expect Indiana Jones 5 in theatres on July 29, 2022.
