The man who seemingly does it all is at it again as Donald Glover announces yet another new high profile project that fans are bound to be excited for! What is even better, is that the project is set to reunite him with his Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge in a big way. Get ready for an all-new Mr. And Mrs. Smith!
The Community star recently announced that he is collaborating once again with Phoebe Waller-Bridge to create and star in an adaptation of the romantic spy action thriller Mr. And Mrs. Smith (2005) as a streaming series for Amazon Prime Video. Glover broke the news about the show through a series of Instagram Stories on his personal account (which are unfortunately no longer available due to the fleeting nature of the Instagram Stories platform).
The show is said to be a new take on the brand first introduced in the 2005 film of the same name which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie as an ordinary married couple going about their normal boring everyday lives… except neither of them is quite as boring as they may seem. The pair are both living secret double-lives as assassins working for different agencies who soon find their lives turned upside down as they are assigned to kill one another by their respective employers.
Both Donald Glover and Phoebe Waller-Bridge will star in the new series, as well as executive producing alongside Yariv Milchan (Ad Astra), Michael Schaefer (The Martian), Jenny Robins (Run), and series co-creator Francesca Sloane (Atlanta), with Sloane also acting as the showrunner. While both Glover and Waller-Bridge have extensive writing resumes, it is unclear if either of them will be involved with actually scripting the series at all or if they will simply focus on the creative direction of the show.
The pair previously worked together in Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) for director Ron Howard, taking on the roles of Lando Calrissian and his trusty droid partner (and maybe more?) L3-37. The duo was one of the best-received aspects of the film and even with Waller-Bridge not being actually on screen (her character was completed using CGI), the two of them had excellent chemistry with one another.
The new Mr. and Mrs. Smith series is set to debut exclusively on Amazon Prime at some point in 2022. At this time there is no additional information regarding the series cast or an exact release date, but we will be sure to keep you updated as more information becomes available.
