‘Iron Fist’ Star Finn Jones On What That Cancelled Third Season Might Have Been About

Almost two-and-a-half years ago the world said goodbye to Netflix and Marvel Television’s Iron Fist series when it was cancelled. The show starred Finn Jones and Jessica Henwick. It was the final solo Marvel series to be released ahead of the planned Defenders crossover event, and also the first of the Marvel shows to get axed, giving it the shortest run of the entire slate. Now, years after the show has come to an end, series star Finn Jones spills on what they had planned for Season 3.

When Iron Fist first premiered back in 2017, it was met with poor-to-mixed reception from both Marvel fans and critics. Many were surprised to see that it had been given an order for a second season. When the series returned, audiences found themselves pleasantly surprised to see the show was on an upward trajectory. With the vast improvement in the quality of the show between the first two seasons, people anticipated seeing the show continue to get even better as it better established itself within the Marvel Cinematic Universe amid the other Marvel Netflix shows. The second season of Iron Fist ended on a massive cliffhanger that left plenty of dangling threads for the then highly anticipated third season.

Then it got cancelled. Bummer.

Unfortunately for fans of Iron Fist and the rest of the Marvel Netflix shows like Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and The Punisher, the streaming service’s business relationship with Marvel had soured during their time working together and the entire line of shows was axed one after another, with no real reasons being given for why, leaving viewers to speculate for themselves.

In a recent interview with Collider, series star Finn Jones opened up about what they had been planning for Season 3 of Iron Fist had the show not come to such an unceremoniously abrupt end. According to Jones:

Raven [Metzner], who was the showrunner for the second season, and I were sure that there was gonna be a Season 3, so we had already devised the whole thing. I was so excited to get into that. It really was gonna be about Danny finally assuming the role of the Iron Fist, fully accomplished, fully charged up, and fully in control of his shit, as well. It was gonna be this amazing story [with] Danny and Ward off in foreign lands as a buddy storyline almost.

Then, you had Colleen in New York, isolated with this new power, struggling to come to terms with her identity and with this power. At some point, we would have met again and probably formed this crazy power couple [or] superhero relationship. Really, Season 3 just had so much promise and it’s a shame to see it squandered and never get to reach its full potential.

Knowing what the future held for the character and that these storylines would now never come to fruition, Jones wasn’t shy about stating his disappointment that the series had come to an unexpected end. When asked how it felt to not having proper closure Jones said:

It’s horrible. It’s like the death of a friend or a close family member. You’ve spent years building this other world within yourself and sharing this other person with the whole world. Usually, with films or plays, you get to see that arc through. There’s a journey. But with ‘Iron Fist’, it was like we just got to the peak. We were just getting there. We’d just turned the show around.

We had just done so much great work, really getting the train back on the tracks. And then, within three weeks of it being released, all of [the Marvel Netflix shows] were wiped out. It was sad. It was stunted. It felt like losing a dear friend. It’s just a shame. There’s not much else I can say.

As it has been over two years since the last of the Marvel Netflix series came to an end, the character rights have officially all returned to Marvel Studios. They can now choose to bring back any of the characters from these shows. We could even potentially see Finn Jones return to the role of Iron Fist in the future. Maybe in a Heroes For Hire series alongside Mike Colter as Luke Cage? Right now the Marvel Netflix star with the biggest chance of returning is Charlie Cox‘s Daredevil, who supposedly already filmed some scenes for the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home.

Alternatively, Marvel could recast or reboot any of the Marvel Netflix series characters, as those shows are not considered official canon. Only time will tell what their plans are for Iron Fist, Daredevil, and the rest of The Defenders in the long run.

You can still revisit Iron Fist Seasons 1 and 2 on Netflix, or catch up on some of Marvel’s newer projects like WandaVision over on Disney+.
