Let’s face it, the Marvel Comics character Morbius isn’t exactly a superstar, despite having been around since the 1970s and headlining his own series at various times. Now he’s getting his own self-titled movie courtesy of Sony and director Daniel Espinosa. Jared Leto leads up the film in the title role. The actor is also here with an introduction to the latest trailer.
Leto’s introduction doesn’t reveal much new information– Michael Morbius has a rare blood disease and uses an experimental process in an attempt to cure himself. Inadvertently, he turns himself into a “living vampire.”
The trailer itself, however, does shed a little more light on the nature of Morbius’ powers and curse. As the character narrates, his transformation has given him, “Increased strength and speed… the ability to use echolocation… and an overpowering urge to consume blood.”
The trailer was created for Japan, so there are subtitles, but both the clip and Leto’s intro are in English. Check it out below:
Joining Leto in the film are Matt Smith as Loxias Crown, a friend of Morbius’ who suffers from the same blood disease (and who is also known as Hunger in the comics); Adria Arjona as Morbius’ fiancée, Martine Bancroft; Tyrese Gibson as cybernetic FBI agent, Simon Stroud; with Jared Harris as an unnamed mentor figure for Morbius and Al Madrigal as another FBI agent, Alberto Rodriguez. Gibson has previously divulged that he signed a three-picture deal, and has described his character as a “superhero.”
Michael Keaton also appears in the trailer but his role is a bit of a mystery. He previously played Adrian Toomes, The Vulture, in Spider-Man: Homecoming. And there is evidence in this and other trailers that Morbius takes place in the same continuity. How and why Toomes surfaces in this film remain to be seen.
Morbius is scheduled to hit theaters on March 19, 2021.
