Patty Jenkins’ Dissatisfaction With The Finale Of ‘Wonder Woman’ Led To The Ending Of ‘Wonder Woman 1984’

Wonder Woman was — and possibly still is — the highlight of the DC Cinematic Universe from Warner Brothers. The picture made $822.2 million at the global box office and received nearly universal excellent reviews — 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. But believe it or not, director Patty Jenkins wasn’t entirely thrilled with the finished product.

While promoting the sequel, Wonder Woman 1984, she admitted that the original ending of Wonder Woman, a massive CGI battle between the title hero and the god of war, Ares (David Thewlis) was dictated by Warner Brothers. She had originally hoped to end on a “smaller” note. But it was her dissatisfaction with the corporately mandated finale that allowed her to give 1984 the ending she wanted.

Speaking to IGN, Jenkins revealed:

“The original end of the first movie was also smaller but the studio made me change it at the last minute. And so, that’s always been a little bit of a bummer that that’s the one thing people talk about because I agreed and I told the studio we didn’t have time to do it, but it was what it was. I ended up loving it, but it was not the original end of the movie. This time around, you know what I loved about it? I love that it has both at the end. We had a visual effects, a big battle, which I just dug into and had such a blast executing, which I felt so satisfied with. But ultimately the end of the movie is much more pared down. That was really, really fun. No spoilers, there’s all kinds of stuff going on, but it was really fun to shape it differently.”

After a long wait, fans can finally enjoy another exploit of Gadot’s Amazing Amazon, when Wonder Woman 1984 is released on Christmas Day in theaters and on HBO Max.
