Weekend Box Office (09/08-09/10): ‘The Nun II’ Conjures A Scary Good Debut

Is it safe to say Halloween season is upon us?  The latest installment of The Conjuring shared universe, The Nun II, scared up $23.6 million for a #1 opening.  Bonnie Aarons returns as the titular ghoul, with Taissa Farmiga (whose sister, Vera Farmiga stars in the core Conjuring movies), and Jonas Bloquet.  Storm Reid also joins the cast.

Unfortunately, this movie may not hold up over the upcoming weeks.  But most horror pictures tend to be front-loaded anyway.  However, The Nun II doesn’t appear to be very good.  Its CinemaScore is a C which is really low.  Exiting audiences tend to be very generous, so this is close to a failing grade.  Its Rotten Tomatoes audience score is a tepid 75% and its critical score is a rotten 44%.

Focus Features

In its second weekend, The Equalizer 3 has made another $12.1M to land at #2, bringing its domestic total to $61.9M.  Globally, it has taken in $107.7M.  The previous Equalizer entries have finished their theatrical runs in the $190M-$192M range, so this one is well on its way to matching that.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 took the #3 spot with $10M.  Via CinemaScore, exiting audiences gave this a B, which is down from the A- that the second movie made.  Its RT audience score is an okay 72%, but critics generally hated it with a 30% Tomatometer score.

Red Chillies Entertainment

Perhaps the most surprising debut in the Top Five is the Indian action film Jawan.  It earned $6.1M over three days, but with previews, it has generated $7.5M.

The film was released in Hindi, but there are also dubbed versions in Tamil and Telugu.

Indian cinema has been steadily making progress in the U.S. and other foreign markets, but Jawan has the highest placement so far.

The reaction has been great.  Its RT critical score is 95% and its audience score is 89%.

Still hanging onto the Top Five is this year’s biggest hit, Barbie.  This is on the verge of its IMAX re-release on September 22.  The standard version generated another $5.9M, bringing its domestic total to $620.4M.

Here are the official numbers:

    1. The Nun 2 (New Line) – 3-day $32.6M/ Wk 1
    2. Equalizer 3 (Sony) – 3-day $12.1M/ Total: $61.9M/ Wk 2
    3. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 (Universal) – 3-day $10M/ Wk 1
    4. Jawan (Yash Raj) – 3-day $6.1M/ Total $7.5M/ Wk 1
    5. Barbie (Warner Bros.) – 3-day $5.9M/ Total $620.4M/ Wk 8

Sadly, fall is a dreadful time for new movies.  Things are going to be slow.  Next weekend sees the release of The Inventor, a family-friendly picture based on Leonardo da Vinci’s life, and A Haunting in Venice, the third film directed by and starring Kenneth Branagh as Agatha Christie’s famous detective Hercule Poirot.

But just another week until that Barbie IMAX release, right?

Will you be checking out anything at the cinema this weekend?
