Weekend Box Office (08/04-08/06): ‘Barbie’ Crosses One Billion Worldwide

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were no match for another toy icon as Barbie continued to dominate the weekend box office, earning another $53 million, bringing its domestic total to $459.4M.  However, worldwide, the doll has crossed the coveted $1 billion mark, something no one saw coming before this picture’s opening.  This marks the first $1B movie from a female director, Greta Gerwig, and the highest-grossing movie of Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling’s careers.

The race for second place was neck-and-neck with Barbie‘s partner Oppenheimer facing off against two newcomers, The Meg 2: The Trench and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

By the end of the weekend, The Meg 2 swam ahead with $30M, officially coming between Barbie and Oppenheimer.  Exiting audiences gave the sequel a B-, down from the B+ that the first Meg received.  On Rotten Tomatoes, it’s clear that critics overall hate this movie, with a 28% average rating, but its audience score is much higher at 73%.

It’s worth noting that The Meg 2 is also from Warner Bros., giving that studio the top two entries this weekend.

As mentioned, Oppenheimer slips to #3, taking in an additional $28.7M.  Its running total is $228.5M, far more than this picture was ever expected to make.

That means that Oppenheimer managed to fend off the weekend’s other major opening, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, although not by much.  That animated feature earned $28M, less than a million less than Oppenheimer.  But Mutant Mayhem opened on Tuesday and that’s too early to fold those grosses into the weekend.  So over the week, it has actually made $43M.

It has gotten rave reviews with a 96% RT score and a 92% audience score.  Exiting audiences gave it an A via CinemaScore and 88% positive via PostTrak.
