Weekend Box Office (07/07-07/09): 5 Vs. 5 – ‘Insidious: The Red Door’ Scares Off ‘Indiana Jones’

The fifth Insidious picture, The Red Door conquered the weekend and dethroned Disney’s dud Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.  Patrick Wilson, who has starred in all of the Insidious films, made his directorial debut with this installment. The film took in $32.65M, making it the second-best opening of the franchise after Insidious 2. That movie m. ade $40M in its first weekend.  Wilson, Rose Byrne, Ty Simpkins, Leigh Whannell, and Lin Shaye all returned.

Critics hate this movie with its Rotten Tomatoes rating sitting at 35%.  Its audience rating is much better but not glowing at 71%.  Exiting audiences were also tepid, giving it 3½ stars out of five via PostTrak.

Disney

Disney is just not having a good time.  Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny took a 56% tumble which isn’t terrible, but considering its weak opening of $60M, it’s not going to come close to making back its ridiculous $300M budget.  At least Elemental, also kind of a dud, is turning into a sleeper that people are trickling out to see.

The Dial of Destiny earned $26.5M to land in second place.

Coming in at #3 is the faith-based film Sound of Freedom, thanks to right-wing groups buying up tickets and handing them out for free.  Over the weekend, it earned $16.9M. It actually came out on the Fourth of July, so it has earned $38.9M overall.

Elemental took in an additional $9.6M to take fourth place and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse webbed up $8M for a fifth-place finish.

Check out the numbers below:

    1. Insidious: The Red Door (Sony/Blumhouse) – 3-day $32.65M/ Wk 1
    2. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny (Disney) – 3-day $26.5M/ Total $121.2M/ Wk 2
    3. Sound of Freedom (Angel) – 3-day $16.9M/ Total $38.9M/ Wk 1
    4. Elemental (Disney) – 3-day $9.6M/ Total $109.1M/ Wk 4
    5. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Sony) – 3-day $8M/ Total $357.6M / Wk 6

Next weekend will see the release of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part 1.  It looks like Insidious: The Red Door picked just the right weekend to open. Obviously this latest Tom Cruise blockbuster will take the top spot next weekend.  This next Mission: Impossible looks to make a killing as its RT score is now at 98% based on close to 200 reviews.

And July will continue to slay as the following weekend sees the release of Oppenheimer and Barbie with AMC reporting that many customers are already buying tickets to both and making this a double feature.

What have you checked out in theaters lately and what are you looking forward to seeing?
