‘Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse’ Third Trailer – Sequel Eyed To Open At Least Twice As Big As The First

Miles Morales is swinging back into theaters in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in just a few weeks, and Sony has webbed up the third and probably final trailer.  While a lot of footage has already been seen in the prior clips, this one does unveil a few new scenes, which include even more new Spider-People, officially dubbed the Spider-Society.  And then there’s Spider-Cat, who may steal the show.

Projections (not from Sony) are starting to roll in. As of right now, Across the Spider-Verse is eyeing a $70-$80 million opening weekend (with some sources even predicting it comes close to $100M). This places it well above that of 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which bowed to $35.4M and went on to make $190.2M in the United States and Canada, and $194M internationally.  The film was a critical darling and won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, but was considered only a modest success at the box office.

But the film thrived once it was released on home video and streaming, so anticipation for the sequel is much higher.

Shameik Moore returns as Miles, with Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy as her universe’s Spider-Woman, popularly referred to as Spider-Gwen or Ghost-Spider.  It’s Gwen who inducts Miles into the Spider-Society.  Jake Johnson is also back as Peter B. Parker.  He is now married to his universe’s Mary Jane Watson.  The pair are now parents to May Day Parker, a baby who will one day grow up to be Spider-Girl. It’s entirely possible that in the Spider-Verse, that version may also appear.

Also returning from Into the Spider-Verse are Brian Tyree Henry as Miles’ father Jefferson Davis and Luna Lauren Vélez as his mother Rio.

Who is the villain in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse?

While Across the Spider-Verse introduces two villains, The Spot (voiced by Jason Schwartzman) and The Vulture (Jorma Taccone), it appears the film’s main antagonist will be Miguel O’Hara (Oscar Isaac), a.k.a. Spider-Man 2099, who popped up in the post-credits scene of Into the Spider-Verse.  Greta Lee voices his AI assistant, Lyla.

Among the new Spider-People are Issa Rae as Jessica Drew/Spider-Woman, Daniel Kaluuya as Hobart “Hobie” Brown/Spider-Punk, and Karan Soni as Pavitr Prabhakar/Spider-Man India.  As we can already tell, there are dozens of other members of the Spider-Society. They appear to have smaller parts, although keep an ear out as it’s likely that they will be voiced by other notable actors.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse hits theaters on June 2.  How high is your anticipation level for this sequel?
