The Super Bowl probably draws just as many viewers for its high-profile and splashy ads as it does for actual football fans. Paramount and Spyglass Media Group are banking on the horror sequel Scream VI, but as has become the norm, they have dropped the Super Bowl trailer online early.
Courtney Cox returns as Gale Weathers, making her the only actor/character to appear in every Scream installment. Hayden Panettiere returns as Kirby Reed, a character she played in 2011’s Scream 4.
The fifth Scream, simply entitled Scream (again), came out last January and was a huge boost to the weak winter box office, ultimately earning $140 million during its theatrical run. Its budget was a meager $24 million.
That film introduced Jenna Ortega as Tara Carpenter, Melissa Barrera as her older sister Sam Carpenter, and Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding as the twins Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin. All four survived and return for Scream VI (by the way, I LOVE the logo with the “VI” incorporated into the “M”), although they are leaving the seemingly cursed town of Woodsboro for the Big Apple, New York. However, the Ghostface legacy manages to catch up to them with a vengeance as, in the trailer, they unearth what looks to be a Ghostface cult. Roger L. Jackson returns as the voice of said slasher.
The new film also stars Jack Champion, Henry Czerny, Liana Liberato, Dermot Mulroney, Devyn Nekoda, Tony Revolori, Josh Segarra, and Samara Weaving.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin & Tyler Gillett return to direct, along with screenwriters James Vanderbilt & Guy Busick.
Fans have already reacted positively to earlier clips that show Ghostface hunting the main cast down in New York City. Although the new Super Bowl trailer dials things back a bit, it gave a lot more in terms of the film’s main storyline.
