In 2021, Black Panther director Ryan Coogler inked a deal with his Proximity Media imprint to develop shows for Disney+ and other Disney-owned outlets like ABC, Hulu, and Freeform. At that time, it was announced that the first project Coogler and his team were working on was a series based on the Wakandan characters from Black Panther with many speculating that it could focus on the Dora Milaje.
That same year, the Hollywood Reporter published a profile on top attorneys in Hollywood and Danai Gurira’s lawyer, Jamie Mandelbaum stated that he helped broker a deal for an Okoye series.
Now, Gurira, who plays Okoye in the Marvel films, has teased that the new show could indeed focus on Okoye.
Dana Gurira’s Teases Okoye
While appearing on the Stephen Colbert Show, she said:
“I have been told… that I can gently allude to this possibility. So I am gently alluding.”
In response, Colbert remarked:
“You gently alluding is the Marvel version of a full monty. I can’t believe I got anything out of you.”
You can watch the interaction below:
In Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Okoye lost her position as the leader of the Dora Milaje but became a Midnight Angel alongside Michaela Coel’s Aneka. They looked awful. Here’s hoping the show will see their suits redesigned.
Previously, Florence Kasumba’s Ayo played a pivotal role in the Disney+ series Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Sadly, Ayo was basically sidelined again in Wakanda Forever. As Aneka’s girlfriend, it’s possible that Kasumba will once again get a spotlight on the Okoye show (or whatever it ends up being called).
Not gonna lie… Gurira’s Okoye is my absolute favorite MCU character. I love her so much and I love the Dora Milaje, so anything that has anything to do with them will have me locked in.
Marvel Studios has already announced its slate for Phase 4. It has only announced a few movies for Phase 5. This program may slot in somewhere between the Fantastic Four movie and the two announced Avengers sequels.
Stay tuned for updates as they arrive!
