It is hard to believe, but this year will the be first time since 2005 that there will NOT be a Doctor Who special airing between Christmas and New Year’s Day. While fans may not have a holiday special to unwrap for 2022, they will find a little something from the BBC in their stockings. It looks like we are going to get a trailer for the 60th Anniversary Special.
The news has been teased on all of Doctor Who’s social media accounts. A teaser for the special, which features David Tennant as the new 14th Doctor, will debut on Christmas Day!

The annual holiday special has become synonymous with the series. David Tennant’s first full story as the 10th Doctor, 2005’s “The Christmas Invasion,” set a high standard in family holiday viewing. After that, year in and year out, fans could expect big things during the Davies and Moffat era.
During the 13th Doctor’s run, showrunnner Chris ChibnallChris Chibnall, for some reason, moved the tradition to New Year’s Day but kept the holiday theme.
The 13th Doctor regenerated in this year’s final special, “The Power of the Doctor,” which aired as part of the BBC’s Centenial celebrations. The suprise-filled finale also marked Chibnall’s departure and the return of Russell T. Davies as show runner. Davies’ first story in his return will be the long-running series’ 60th Anniversary Special.
The announcement of the trailer comes after a flurry of social media posts showing off Ncuti Gatwa as the 15th Doctor. Over the past few weeks we met his new companion Ruby Sunday (played by Millie Gibson) and got our first look at what they will be sporting when they show up in Season 14 in 2024.
The Doctor Who 60th Anniversary special (which has not had its title revealed) is expected to arrive on November 23, 2023.
