‘Indiana Jones 5’ Still Images Reveal More About The Story And Characters

One of the biggest questions in Hollywood right now is what to expect from Indiana Jones 5.  Following the disappointment that was Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, is there even any demand for ANOTHER one of these, especially starring an 80-year-old Harrison Ford?  Or could this pull a Top Gun: Maverick and tap into nostalgia for an audience that is starved for new content from this dormant franchise?

At this point, we don’t even know this film’s name.  (Despite a fan-made Youtube “trailer” that’s going around, it is not likely that it will be called Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny.)  We also don’t know what this movie will be about.  But perhaps this new gallery of still photos will clue us in a little.

What we do know is that in keeping with Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the action jumps forward in time pretty significantly, to 1969.  That certainly accommodates this older Indy.

Here is a look at Ford in action in New York City.  With this more modern setting — and minus the fedora and leather jacket — this looks like it could have been lifted from any number of Ford’s score of action flicks.

Don’t worry. We get “classic Indy” and a more exotic location at some point in the film.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge jumps into the action as Indy’s god-daughter, Helena Brody.  There are rumblings that should this film prove successful, Waller-Bridge will assume the lead role in upcoming films.

Here are some looks at Helena Brody with and without Indy.

It is known that Ford will be digitally de-aged for Indy 5‘s opening scene, for a flashback in which viewers will meet the new villain, Jürgen Voller, played by Mads Mikkelsen, who will return in 1969, causing Indy to come out of retirement to stop him.

This image seems to be from the flashback and as you can see, Voller shops at the same store as Toht from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

After the fall of the Third Reich, Voller was recruited by NASA.  (This character is based on the real-life ex-Nazi scientist-turned-U.S.-employed rocket scientist Werner von Braun.)

Voller has one henchman, Basil, played by Toby Jones, but we don’t have a picture of him yet.  However, he has another henchman, who will likely be a more active character, Klabber, as portrayed by Boyd Holbrook, and we do have images of him.

One more new character has been revealed in these photos, Agent Mason, portrayed by Shaunette Renée Wilson.  Her wardrobe and styling indicate this film’s late ’60s time setting more than any of these other pictures.

No clue what’s happening here!

In addition to the previously mentioned cast members, John Rhys-Davies returns as Sallah, while Thomas Kretschmann, Antonio Banderas, and Olivier Richters have undisclosed roles.

This marks the first Indiana Jones movie to not be helmed by Steven Spielberg.  Logan‘s James Mangold steps in.  Mangold also co-wrote the screenplay with Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth.

At this time, very little is known about Indiana Jones 5, but there are still several months to go before it’s released.  This still-untitled film hits theaters on June 30, 2023.  Are you looking forward to another adventure with Harrison Ford’s Indiana Jones?
