Weekend Box Office (11/04-11/06): ‘Black Adam’ Reigns Again Before ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Takes Over

Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate and Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam
New Line – Warner Bros.

Black Adam continues to fend off all comers in its third weekend.  However, word has it that this DC superhero installment may not wind up “in the black.”  Earning an additional $18.5 million, its running domestic total is $137.4M on a budget of roughly $200M.  Globally, it has earned about $300M, but Warner Bros. and New Line probably spent about $200M on advertising, so it’s still got a way to go before it makes a profit.  Unfortunately, poor word of mouth appears to have torpedoed Black Adam‘s chances at success.

There’s also the fact that this coming weekend sees the release of another major superhero movie with “Black” in the title and is absolutely going to make over $100M in its opening frame.  You know what I’m talking about.

With its China opening postponed, it looks like Black Adam will top out at about $400M worldwide.  Johnson’s Hobbs & Shaw benefitted from $200M from China.

Anime movies continue to flourish at the U.S. box office.  One Piece Film: Red locked up $9.47M in its opening weekend to land at #2.  The film opened in both subtitled and dubbed versions.

Obviously, these anime movies are preaching to the choir, but fans that turned out gave it an A CinemaScore.  Those polled by PostTrak gave it an 88% positive.

Crunchyroll was behind this release and this follows the impressive openings of Jujutsu Kaisen 0 and Dragon Ball Super: Superhero, the latter of which opened at #1.

The older-female-skewing Ticket to Paradise continued to hold up well in its third weekend, earning an additional $8.5M, bringing its domestic total to $46.7M.

Holdovers from the Halloween season rounded out the Top Five.

Next weekend BELONGS to Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.  It’s just a matter of how much it will make.  Look for this Marvel production to be the first triple-digit opening since… well, since the last Marvel movie, Thor: Love and Thunder in July.

Do you have your Black Panther: Wakanda Forever tickets already?
