‘Deadpool 3’ Features The Return Of Hugh Jackman As Wolverine

Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in Logan

Following Patrick Stewart‘s reprisal of the role of Professor Charles Xavier in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, another old-school mutant is about to stomp into the Marvel Cinematic Universe… and he’s a big one! Actually, he is probably the biggest. Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds appear to have put aside their fake feud as Jackman popped up in a video that Reynolds posted on social media to announce Deadpool 3 with the promise that Jackman would appear as Wolverine/Logan at least one more time.

The video announced that Deadpool 3 will hit theaters on September 6, 2024. This is the post-Labor Day weekend in the U.S.. Disney had previously locked in this date but didn’t announce what movie would be released. At this time, New Line also has this date locked in for an unannounced horror movie.

The role of Wolverine in the 20th Century Fox X-Men franchise made Jackman a star.  Interestingly, Hugh Jackman was cast at the last minute after Dougray Scott had to drop out of 2000’s first X-Men when filming of Mission: Impossible 2 ran over schedule.  (Another fun fact, this also forced Thandie Newton to drop out of Charlie’s Angels.)  Jackman went on to appear in X2: X-Men United (2003) and X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). He was the first mutant to get a solo film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which included Reynolds’ first appearance as Deadpool, although the depiction was heavily criticized for deviating too far from the comics. (They removed the Merc with a Mouth’s mouth!)

Jackman made a brief cameo in 2011’s X-Men: First Class and a longer one in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016), which seemed to set up a potential Weapon X film. He appeared as a more recognizable Logan in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014), and starred in two more solo outings, The Wolverine (2013) and Logan (2017).  Jackman popped up in archival footage in the first Deadpool and in a photograph in Deadpool 2.

While Jackman’s Wolverine is the most popular character in the main film franchise, Reynolds’ two Deadpool movies are the highest-grossing of the 20th Century’s franchise, having taken in $1.56 billion combined.

Deadpool 3 will be the first in the series to be released since Disney bought 20th Century, however, Marvel Studios CEO Kevin Feige has assured that this sequel will be released with an R-rating in keeping with the two previous installments.

Are you excited about Deadpool’s Disney debut?  What do you think about Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine?  And what does this mean for the future of mutants in the MCU?
