The time is approaching to close the umbrellas. Netflix has renewed the quirky superhero action-comedy The Umbrella Academy for a fourth and final season. Showrunner and executive producer Steve Blackman announced:
“I’m so excited that the incredibly loyal fans of The Umbrella Academy will be able to experience the fitting end to the Hargreeves siblings’ journey we began five years ago. But before we get to that conclusion, we’ve got an amazing story ahead for season four, one that will have fans on the edge of their seats until the final minutes.”
The streaming series is based on the comic book of the same name, written by Gerard Way and illustrated by Gabriel Bá. With Season 3, the live-action version has caught up to the source material. So if it helps, there isn’t more comic material to adapt at this point, so the TV show should be able to wrap things up nicely.
In June, Blackman divulged that he already knew how he wanted to end the series but left the door open for further adventures, should Netflix request them.
“I have what I think is an end to the TV show. Netflix may want more than that, but I have a sweet thought of where I think the show should end and where we’re going.”
Castmembers Elliot Page (Viktor), Tom Hopper (Luther), David Castañeda (Diego), Emmy Raver-Lampman (Allison), Robert Sheehan (Klaus), Aidan Gallagher (Five), Justin H. Min (Ben), Ritu Arya (Lila), and Colm Feore (Reginald Hargreeves) are confirmed to be coming back, along with Blackman. (For Luther’s sake, we can only hope that Genesis Rodriguez will be back as Sloane!)
At the end of Season 3, the Umbrellas, due to their chronic mucking around with reality, found themselves in a world where they no longer possessed superpowers. So we’ll just have to wait and see how that plays out!
Blackman will remain in the Netflix family (if not the Hargreeves). He has already signed on to adapt the Playstation game Horizon Zero Dawn.
