Weekend Box Office (08/12-08/14): ‘Bullet Train’ Takes #1; ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Jets Back Into The Top 5

David Leitch’s Bullet Train chugged along, remaining at #1, however, this weekend overall marked the lowest box office gross of the entire summer with all movies bringing in a combined $66 million. This weekend is 3% shy from last year, and that’s with pandemic concerns alleviated considerably. Easing back 55%, Bullet Train took in $13.4M this weekend. Percentage-wise, this sophomore frame descent is better than Leitch’s previous summer blockbuster, Hobbs & Shaw, which dipped 58% in its second weekend.

DC League of Super-Pets fetched an additional $7.17M to land at #2.  While all movies dipped with no new competition, Nope took the biggest tumble, falling from #3 last weekend to #5, landing beneath Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which actually ticked up a little from last weekend, +2%.

Re-entering the Top Five is Top Gun: Maverick, which was “re-released” in theaters (despite the fact that it never left). This new release is part of a “fan appreciation” event with immersive formats and behind-the-scenes featurettes. This is the #10 top title for IMAX of all time, earning $52M in the U.S. and $102M worldwide.

While Bullet Train could have gone either way, from the outset, it looked like a niche movie that wasn’t necessarily for everyone. Top Gun: Maverick has proven to be the ultimate mass-appeal film, drawing nearly every demographic.

Check out the Top Five below:

    1. Bullet Train (Sony) – 3-day $13.4M/Total $54.4M/Wk 2
    2. DC League of Super-Pets (Warner Bros.) – 3-day $7.17M/Total $58.3M Wk 3
    3. Top Gun: Maverick (Paramount) – 3-day $7.15M/Total $673.8M/Wk 12
    4. Thor: Love and Thunder (Disney) – 3-day $5.311M/Total $325.3M/Wk 6
    5. Nope (Universal) – 3-day $5.3M/Total $107.5M/Wk 4

Once again, it’s going to be slow at the box office as no major movies are dropping until about mid-October. After working so hard to win back audiences, it’s a little odd that the studios aren’t giving them anything new to watch. But with schools starting back, maybe they assumed folks had other things to do than hit the cinema.

Check back next week to see how things play out.
