Pause For Laughter: ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’ Confirms Lady Gaga And Release Date

Lady Gaga will continue to pursue acting accolades. It appears she announced that she would be playing Harley Quinn (or a facsimile) in the sequel to Todd Phillips’ 2019 blockbuster, Joker, inspired by the DC Comics villain.  In addition, Warner Bros. has announced that the sequel will arrive in theaters on October 4, 2024.

While many musical artists have dabbled in acting, very few (like Will Smith and Mark Wahlberg, just to name two) manage to excel in that field.  But unlike many, Gaga aimed her sights directly on prestige pictures or those tailored to her strengths.  She won an Emmy for her role in American Horror Story: Hotel, and was nominated for Golden Globes and Oscars for A Star Is Born.  While she did not win in the acting categories, her original song “Shallow” (a duet with co-star Bradley Cooper) won both.  She did earn an acting prize for A Star is Born, but… it was for the MTV Movie & TV Awards.

She was heavily favored to be recognized for last year’s House of Gucci, but that movie wound up being a commercial and critical disappointment.

Speaking of awards, Joaquin Phoenix won several awards for playing Arthur Fleck in the first Joker, including the Academy Award, the BAFTA, Critics’ Choice, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild Award.

In addition to being critically acclaimed, Joker was a surprise hit, bringing in over $1 billion at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time (not adjusted for inflation).

Its sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux has been rumored to be at least partially a musical, making Gaga a perfect fit.  Don’t forget that Phoenix displayed some solid pipes in Walk the Line.

The subtitle, “Folie à Deux” is a French term that refers to a mental disorder that affects two people.

Filming is set to begin in December with Phillips returning.  You can view Gaga’s announcement below.  Notice that it is set to that standard “Cheek by Cheek” a song that Gaga has recorded and performed alongside Tony Bennett.  Check it out:
