“Evil doesn’t sleep. It waits.”

Ahead of the show’s big debut on September 2, Prime Video dropped a new trailer for Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power during its highly-anticipated San Diego Comic-Con panel.

Tolkien expert and mega-fan Stephen Colbert moderated the panel. Fans filled Hall H with anticipation, hoping to learn more about this new series that would take place thousands of years before Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogies. From the noise of the crowd, their wishes were fulfilled!

A New Trailer Out Of SDCC

The trailer for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power provides fans with an epic middle-earth tale that looks like it could be straight out of Tolkien’s books. It focuses on a young Galadriel talking about the end of a terrible war and how she once thought there was a bright future of peace and prosperity ahead. Several characters are seen celebrating a new era of peace, with the Second Age supposedly being a new beginning. But they were all deceived, as another evil creature was rising. The trailer quickly cuts away to flashes of incoming doom creeping across the land in the form of Sauron himself!

There is a lot riding on the Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Instead of following in the footpath of Jackson’s movies, JD Payne and Patrick McKay took a different approach. They decided to use Tolkien’s appendices and footnotes to create the story we’ll soon see. Besides buying the rights to Tolkien’s work, Amazon has also dropped $450 million on the series. They have also committed to five full seasons in hopes it will resonate will fans (and subscribers). This is indeed a big gamble for the streaming service.

What We Know About The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power

From what has been revealed about The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power, the series will play like a 10-hour movie. According to McKay:

“[The series] will be about the forging of the rings. Rings for the elves, rings for dwarves, rings for men, and then the one ring Sauron used to deceive them all. It’s the story of the creation of all those powers, where they came from, and what they did to each of those races.”

For a more detailed description, Amazon released this synopsis:

Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power brings to screens for the very first time the heroic legends of the fabled Second Age of Middle-earth’s history. This epic drama is set thousands of years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings and will take viewers back to an era in which great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the finest of threads, and one of the greatest villains that ever flowed from Tolkien’s pen threatened to cover all the world in darkness.

Beginning in a time of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared reemergence of evil on Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains to the majestic elf-capital of Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone.
