‘Stargirl’ Returns This August With Some Frenemies

The CW Network will be looking pretty different this fall. The network that has become synonymous with comic book adaptations only has Stargirl on its fall schedule. Stargirl centers around a group of young heroes picking up the mantle of the classic DC superteam, the Justice Society of America.

The Arrowverse, as it was originally dubbed, has shrunk considerably. Heavy hitters Flash and Superman & Lois are being held back until midseason, along with the new Batman-less Batman series Gotham Knights. Two other series, Batwoman and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, ended in cancelation. The non-DC comic book soap Riverdale, based on the Archie Comics characters, will return for a final season, but not until 2023. We’re staying in the superhero business,” The CW CEO Mark Pedowitz said. “We’re not as robust as we were, but we’re still there… We plan to stay in that business.”

STARGIRL SEASON THREE TRAILER

Season 3 picks up directly from the events of the last. They’ve defeated Eclipso, and life is returning to normal in Blue Valley, NE. But it ended with the surprise return of Sylvester Pemberton/Starman (Joel McHale). The trailer also showcases the return of members of the Injustice Society from Season 1.  Although, these villains don’t look like they want to be villains anymore.

The Season Three trailer, “Frenemies,” showcases Courtney’s attempt to help the bad guys “break good.” The Crocks, Larry (Sportsmaster) and Paula (Tigress) (Neil Hopkins ANDJoy Osmanski), moved in next door with their teenage daughter Artemis (Stella Smith).  Cindy Berman, a/k/a Shiv (Meg DeLacy), is also back and looks like she wants to be part of the team.

According to Bassinger, Season 3 of DC’s Stargirl will see these “Frenemies” dealing with a murder mystery together. “You know what, I’m just gonna say it,” she told TVLine earlier this year. “Murder mystery! And how evil and good are going to live in a town together and figure out who the murderer is.”

The teen superhero show began life on the now defunct DC Universe service in 2020. When studio heads looked at the show, they liked what they saw. They decided to air the series on the CW (with new episodes arriving the day after they hit the app.) It was quickly picked up for a second season, which aired exclusively on the CW in the Summer of 2021.

Stargirl stars Brec Bassinger as Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl.  The show also stars Anjelika Washington, Meg DeLacy, Yvette Monreal, Cameron Gelman, Trae Romano, Amy Smart, and Luke Wilson. This season sees Joel McHale joining the cast full-time.

Stargirl returns to TV Wednesday nights this fall, beginning on August 31 on the CW network.
