After appearing in movies for Marvel and DC, Sylvester Stallone is donning the superhero mantle once again. This time in a film titled Samaritan!
No Good Deed Goes Unpunished
In his first starring role in a comic book movie, Stallone plays Mr. Smith, a mysterious and reclusive neighbor who young Sam Cleary (Javon “Wanna” Walton) is convinced is the superhero known as the Samaritan. It was thought this super-powered vigilante died twenty years ago in a fiery warehouse battle against his arch-enemy, Nemesis. (Yes, the arch-nemesis of the film is called Nemesis. Color me intrigued.) With crime on the rise and Granite City on the brink of chaos, Sam decides to make it his mission to convince Mr. Smith to don the superhero suit once again to save his city.
Best known for his Oscar-worthy role as Rock Balboa, Stallone is no stranger to the world of superheroes. He appeared in the MCU as Stakar Ogord in Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and as King Shark in the DCEU film The Suicide Squad. Starring in his own superhero film like Samaritan, however, was something he really wanted to be a part of:
I love action films that also have heart. I wanted to be involved with Samaritan because this story has many layers that I think people can relate to. It’s something of a morality tale that is also very exciting to watch. We are thrilled that this will be seen globally on Prime Video, where my fans and all audiences can enjoy it together around the world.
A First Look at Samaritan
In anticipation of its streaming debut, MGM and Prime Video have released these first-look images and the film’s poster.
From the image below, the heart of the film looks to be the relationship between Sam Cleary (Walton) and Mr. Smith (Stallone):
The second image gives a glimpse of Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom) as Nemesis seemingly threatening Smith:
If there was any doubt Mr. Smith is the Samaritan, this image dashes it all away:
Lastly, the poster for the film. All I can say is that I can’t wait to see Stallone in the suit!
Julius Avery (Overlord) directed the film from a screenplay by Bragi F. Schut (Ninjago, Escape Room). Along with Stallone, Walton, and Asbæk, Samaritan stars Dasha Polanco (Orange Is the New Black, In the Heights) and Moises Arias (King of Staten Island, Hannah Montana).
