Vincent Van Gogh is undoubtedly one of the most famous painters to ever live. His artworks are critically acclaimed, with ‘The Starry Night’ being one of the most recognizable paintings. The image features prominently on posters, greeting cards, and other paraphernalia. But now, LEGO, in collaboration with the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, will immortalize ‘The Starry Night’ in tiny brick form with a new set coming next week.

This collaboration is interesting for LEGO as they usually handle pop culture IP. Though there have been a few amazing standalone sets not tied to any big movie or TV franchise, like the recent typewriter or the massive grand piano, this marks the first time that LEGO translated a piece of fine art for fans. It will be interesting to see how deep this collab with the Museum of Modern art goes as the MoMA houses some of the art world’s most famous pieces, like Salvador Dali’s ‘The Persistence of Memory’ and ‘The Dream’ by Henri Rousseau.

As with many of LEGO’s more obscure yet instantly fan-favorite sets, ‘The Starry Night’ originally began on LEGO Ideas, the forum for fans to submit their concepts for possible LEGO sets to be voted on by other fans. What makes the set so eye-catching is the way it encapsulates Van Gogh’s smooth brushstrokes using only LEGO pieces. On top of that, the finished piece can be displayed in two different ways: free-standing or hung on a wall with an included hook.

The set also comes with a tiny Van Gogh minifig complete with a paint palette and a smaller version of ‘The Starry Night’ on an easel.

Priced at $170 USD for just over 2300 bricks, ‘The Starry Night’ will be available to LEGO VIP members and MoMA members on May 25. The regular public will have to wait until June 1 to purchase the set. You can purchase ‘The Starry Night’ directly from LEGO.com
