Leslie Grace Talks Michael Keaton And Says ‘Batgirl’ Sequel Talks Have Already Begun

Leslie Grace as Batgirl
Warner Bros.

Earlier in the year, we got a look at Leslie Grace as the titular character in the upcoming HBO Max original movie Batgirl and a glimpse at Brendan Fraser as the villain Firefly. The film doesn’t arrive until sometime later this year, and we have yet to see any footage or even a trailer. Even so, talks have already begun in terms of a sequel.

In an interview with Variety, Leslie Grace stated that she and the directors have already discussed where to take the Barbara Gordon story from here:

“[Laughs] We got to see this first one first. But there’s definitely some talks about what it could be. I’ve seen some of what we’ve shot, obviously in the playback and stuff like that, and it’s insane. We’ve already been talking about where do we take this from here because there’s so much that happens in this film. There are a lot of different themes in the plot that we touch on. It’s not just the action. There’s a love story. There’s this father-daughter relationship. There’s looking at the world through a lens that isn’t just black and white and seeing the color and the spectrum between things.”

Working With Michael Keaton

Grace also discussed working with Michael Keaton, the cinematic Batman, saying:

“It was wild for everyone. Our directors were like two little kids. They’re legit Batman nerds openly. He’s Batman, man! I couldn’t even believe that I was sharing space with Batman. I want to say more, but I can’t. It was insane, surreal, incredible. It was the stuff of dreams really.”

Originally, Keaton was supposed to reprise his role as Batman in The Flash. That movie reportedly draws inspiration from the “Flashpoint” storyline in the comics and would introduce some kind of multiverse as part of the overall reboot of the DCEU. This would also explain why Keaton is Batman and not Ben Affleck.

However, The Flash has been pushed to June 23, 2023, as part of an overall shuffle of the Warner Bros – DC movie slate. So far, it has not been announced that Batgirl will be delayed… yet. So this movie may arrive with Keaton as Batman with no explanation. We’ll see!

Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah directed Batgirl based on a screenplay by Christina Hodson.  The film also features J.K. Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon and Ivory Aquino as Alysia Yeoh.

Are you excited about Batgirl?  What about seeing Michael Keaton back in the role of Batman?
