‘Stranger Things 4’ Trailer: War Is Coming To Hawkins

“Your suffering is almost at an end,” declares the surprising new villain of Stranger Things 4 at the beginning of the new trailer. Indeed, fans have been suffering through delays in the return of this smash Netflix series mostly thanks to the coronavirus, which halted filming from March 2020 until September of that same year. (Season 3 dropped in 2019.)  In the meantime, the once-tiny teen characters all shot to adulthood, so that should be interesting to see played out in the new season.

We’ve already seen glimpses of Lucas’ new flattop fade haircut and Will’s godawful bowl cut. (Was that REALLY in style in the late 1980s?)

The trailer is partly narrated by dialogue from Max, Paul Reiser’s Sam Owens, and the previously mentioned surprise villain. It is Owens’ ominous statement that warns that “War is coming” to Hawkins and that without Eleven, who no longer has her powers, they will lose.

The trailer also states “Every ending has a beginning.” Indeed, Season 4 is the penultimate for this franchise. Things will wrap up in the upcoming Season 5. The new trailer is packed with new footage that does exactly what a good trailer should. It teases the developments of the new installment without giving too much away. Fans have a lot to look forward to!

I won’t spoil it, but I abso-freakin’-lutely love the song they used to score this. Check it out!

Yes, that is a slowed down (but still bombastic) remix of Journey’s 1983 Top Ten hit “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)!” I sometimes rankle at the use of slowed-down pop songs in trailers, but Jordan Peele may have turned me around on that. The downbeat remixes in his trailers are excellent and perfectly chosen. I feel the same way about this one.

I find it a little weird that the clip opens with Max mourning the death of her stepbrother Billy who was a complete monster, even though I suppose the Duffer Brothers slipped him a slight redemption arc in Season 3. But that’s far from the weirdest thing about Max in this trailer.  We’ll have to wait and see how the show explains that.

But clearly, the biggest reveal in the video is a more humanoid, intelligent Demogorgon.  What’s his story?  How will this change the game?

Stranger Things 4, unfortunately, will be split into two parts.  There will be nine episodes in this season, with volume one dropping on May 27 and volume two arriving on July 1. Matt and Ross Duffer who created the show will also write and direct episodes.

Season 4 stars Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, David Harbour as Jim Hopper, Finn Wolfhard as Mike Wheeler, Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven, Gaten Matarazzo as Dustin Henderson, Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair, Natalia Dyer as Nancy Wheeler, Charlie Heaton as Jonathan Byers, Cara Buono as Karen Wheeler, Matthew Modine as Martin Brenner, Noah Schnapp as Will Byers, Sadie Sink as Max Mayfield, Joe Keery as Steve Harrington, Paul Reiser as Sam Owens, Maya Hawke as Robin Buckley, Priah Ferguson as Erica Sinclair, and Brett Gelman as Murray Bauman.  Season 4 introduces Jamie Campbell Bower as Peter Ballard, Eduardo Franco as Argyle, and Joseph Quinn as Eddie Munson.

The first five episodes of Stranger Things 4 will arrive on Netflix on May 27.
