Warner Bros. Animation Developing ‘Kite Man’ Spinoff From ‘Harley Quinn’

Kite Man

He certainly isn’t the first character most people would think of when someone asks “which comic book villain deserves their own animated series?” Fans of Warner Bros’ hit show Harley Quinn will be excited to hear that the team from that show is developing a spinoff that follows everyone’s favorite least likely to succeed criminal, Kite Man.

Harley Quinn‘s co-developer and co-showrunner Patrick Schumacker recently announced the news at last month’s South By Southwest event. Schumacker said that they are currently working on developing a series called Noonan’s (which could very well change by the time the show gets made). The title is named after the supervillain bar seen in the Harley Quinn series.

Sometimes You Want To Go Where Everybody Knows Your Name

The show will follow the misadventures of Chuck Brown, aka Kite Man, as he buys the bar and tries to run the place like his very own supervillain version of the titular bar from Cheers. Patrick Schumacker says:

“He tries to run the bar by himself but it doesn’t turn out so easy. We have Harley and Ivy appear in the first episode, but after that we have different goons and villains appearing every episode like Lex Luthor and Bane. It will be kind of like ‘Cheers’ for supervillains.

It sounds like a bold new direction for the Kite Man character. During the events of the Season 2 finale of Harley Quinn, Chuck was last seen having his heart broken after his engagement to Poison Ivy was broken off. Maybe buying the bar is his mid-life crisis attempt to reinvent himself as something more than he has always been? Either way, it’s great to hear that the producers of Harley Quinn have figured out a fun new way to keep Kite Man around following the end of his relationship with Ivy. He’s very much proven to be a lot of fun.

“Kite Man! Hell Yeah!”

Kite Man was created by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang back in 1960, where he served as part of Batman’s extensive rogues gallery. As a supervillain who uses kites and kite-based weaponry while committing his crimes, he has never really been taken very seriously in the comics. While he was never really out of play, Kite Man was reintroduced to prominence in recent years as a running gag during the DC Rebirth era.

In the Harley Quinn series where he is voiced by Matt Olberg, Kite Man is also viewed as a bit of a joke for most of his tenure. When he first appears, uttering his infectious catchphrase “Kite Man, Hell Yeah!”, there is a collective eye roll felt by nearly every character on screen. Still, Kite Man manages to win over audiences and somehow (at least temporarily) win the heart of Poison Ivy (portrayed by Lake Bell) almost entirely on his often undeserved confidence.

There is currently no real timeline as to when we can expect more information on Noonan’s, let alone when we should expect to see the series make its way to HBO max. So for now, it is all one big waiting game. Fans will at least be glad to hear that we have Season 3 of Harley Quinn heading our way some time before the end of the year. Hopefully, we’ll also get a healthy dose of Kite Man action there. Hell Yeah!

Are you excited about Noonan’s? Be honest. Would you watch a show about Kite Man? We would love to hear your thoughts in the comments section below! Be sure to stick around for more updates on HBO Max and Warner Bros Animation!
