Weekend Box Office (03/11-03/13): ‘The Batman’ Fends Off His Greatest Opponent… BTS?!

Okay, so I was unaware that not only did AMC hike the ticket prices for The Batman in its first weekend, but Regaland Cinemark did as well. (I still blame AMC. Look what you started!) However, it seems that this movement is just to raise prices on the opening weekend. All three lowered their prices for The Batman‘s second frame. Even so, Matt Reeves’ DC Comics adaptation took in $66 million in its sophomore weekend, bringing its domestic total to $238.5M. This is especially impressive as this movie is three hours long and can’t be screened as many times as the average flick.

The movie may have gotten a boost from Zoë Kravitz, who plays Catwoman (although they never call her that) hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend.

The Batman has been well-received by nearly everyone that has seen it. It has an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score, a 90% certified audience score, an A- CinemaScore from exiting audiences, and 4½ stars out of five via PostTrak.

Worldwide, this picture has clocked past $400M, on its way to crossing the half-billion mark. And this is just the second weekend, so place your bets, but this looks likely to hit $1 billion during its theatrical run, a feat only accomplished by The Dark Knight Rises, Joker, and Aquaman in terms of DC movies.

The Batman is expected to be #1 next week, as nothing major is releasing.

But perhaps more impressive than The Batman‘s performance is that the only shake-up in the Top Five is that BTS: Permission to Dance has stomped into the Top Five at #3, and it only screened in 803 theaters! It won’t make any more money. It was streamed live to theaters on Saturday night, March 12, but dang! It made a ton of money on that one screening!

Though it didn’t crack the Top Five, the Indian period musical romance Radhe Shyam landed at #7, and at one point, it looked to hit #5, replacing Death on the Nile. But then BTS happened and pushed both movies out of the Top Five. But Radhe Shyam‘s performance is still pretty darn impressive regardless!

Check the numbers out below:

    1. The Batman (Warner Bros.) – 3-day: $66M/Total $238.5M/Wk 2
    2. Uncharted (Sony) – 3-day $9.25M/Total $113.3M/Wk 4
    3. BTS Permission to Dance (Trag) – Sat $6.8M/Wk 1
    4. Dog (UAR) – $5.3M/Total $47.8M/Wk 4
    5. Spider-Man: No Way Home (Sony) – 3-day $4M/Total $792.2M/Wk 13

Once again, The Batman should remain at #1 next weekend. Nothing major will open until March 25, when Aaron and Adam Nee’s action-comedy The Lost City arrives. This picture boasts a stellar cast fronted by Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. Brad Pitt also stars (although his role is reportedly just a cameo), and Daniel Radcliffe appears to be playing the villain.

On a personal level, I’m interested to see how this picture turns out, as Aaron and Adam Nee are attached to helm the Netflix live-action Masters of the Universe movie. The twins previously directed the indie dramedy Band of Robbers. Is it possible that Masters of the Universe will have a comedic tone?

Did you hit the multiplex this weekend?  What did you see?  What upcoming movies are you looking forward to?
