All New ‘Sonic 2’ Trailer Shows High Octane Action, Punch-Happy Knuckles

Though we’re only weeks away from the film’s release Paramount Pictures dropped a brand new trailer for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which you can watch above.

The trailer is a hodgepodge of action sequences but focuses on the return of Dr. Robotnik and his quest to obtain a new unlimited power source. That source comes in the form of a chaos emerald (which fans of the game will recognize), and it imbues Robotnik with the power to level a city. It’s up to Sonic and Tails to stop him. Robotnik, however, has a surprise for them: an alliance with the powerful Knuckles, a super-strong echidna.

The original Sonic the Hedgehog film was released in February of 2020 to mixed reviews. It garnered box office revenues of over $300 million, which is pretty good considering the world shut down due to the Covid-19 outbreak just a month after the movie hit theaters. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 looks to expand on the game’s characters, introducing both Knuckles and Tails, Sonic’s fox sidekick.

The latest trailer for "Sonic the Hedgehog 2" shows that Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) is as strong as Sonic (Ben Schwartz) is fast.

Jeff Fowler returned to direct the sequel, based on a script from Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington. Also returning is the first film’s principal cast, including Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic, James Marsden as Sonic’s friend Tom, and Jim Carrey as the film’s antagonist, Dr. Robotnik.

Joining them for the sequel is Shemar Moore, best known as Derek Morgan in the long-running series Criminal Minds but who also voiced Cyborg in numerous DC animated films. And in a surprising twist of casting, Idris Elba is the voice of Knuckles. I shouldn’t need to go into Elba’s filmography, but he appeared as Heimdall in the MCU, Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad, and Macavity in Cats. (I guess they can’t all be winners.)

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 hits theaters on April 8, and you can buy tickets now. The first film is currently streaming on Hulu and Paramount+ if you want to catch up before watching the sequel.
