90 Year Old John Williams Returns To Pen The Theme To ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’

John Williams – The Hollywood Bowl

John Williams just turned 90 years old but isn’t slowing down. He has scores coming up in Indiana Jones 5 and Steven Spielberg’s upcoming semi-autobiographical The Fablemans. The composer is also working on a piano concerto, collaborating with cellist Yo-Yo Ma, and plans to conduct symphonies in Europe later this year. He has decided to scale back his film work, but he will be revisiting the Star Wars galaxy at least once more, having penned the theme song for Disney+’s upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi. Williams recorded the new song last week with a Los Angeles orchestra.

The Music Of A Galaxy Far Far Away

John Williams won an Oscar for the score to the first Star Wars. He went on to score the rest of the original and sequel trilogies — The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker. Snippets of his music have been featured in all of the other Star Wars projects, including the cartoons.

On top of the Oscar for Star Wars, Williams has four more Academy Awards, for Fiddler on the Roof, Jaws, E.T. – The Extra-Terrestrial, and Schindler’s List.  On top of that, Williams’ stirring melodies have been heard in Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the Indiana Jones franchise, Home Alone, Hook, Sabrina, Saving Private Ryan, and the Harry Potter franchise. He recently collaborated with Spielberg again on the director’s first musical, West Side Story.

About Obi-Wan Kenobi

Ewan McGregor will reprise the role of Obi-Wan Kenobi, whom he played in the prequel trilogy. Hayden Christensen is also expected to appear as Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader. Also starring is Joel Edgerton as Owen Lars and Bonnie Plesse as Beru Lars. Obi-Wan Kenobi takes place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. He is living in exile on Tatooine to watch over Anakin’s son, Luke, in order to prevent the Empire from finding him. It is there that Kenobi adopts the alias of “Ben” and establishes himself as a hermit feared by the Tusken Raiders.

So, viewers of The Mandalorian and Book of Boba Fett, you know what this means!  More sand!

The cast also includes Moses Ingram, Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Varma, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Sung Kang, Simone Kessell, Benny Safdie, Maya Erskine, and Rory Ross. Joby Harold is the writer of the series. Deborah Chow, who helmed two episodes of The Mandalorian, is directing. Obi-Wan Kenobi debuts on Disney+ on May 25, 2022.

Are you looking forward to hearing a new Star Wars theme by the legendary John Williams?
