‘Scream 6’ Is Officially A Go

***SPOILER WARNING: If you haven’t yet seen Scream (2022), this article contains information that may be considered SPOILERS, so proceed with caution or turn back now!***

Just weeks after the release of the fifth Scream movie, Paramount and Spyglass have greenlit another sequel, Scream 6, with the same creative team. Radio Silence’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will be back to direct. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick will return to pen the script.  Filming is expected to take place this summer.

In a joint statement, Paramount and Spyglass expressed:

“We are tremendously grateful to the fans around the world who enthusiastically received our film. We can’t wait for audiences to see what Radio Silence, writers Jamie & Guy and Project X have in store for our Woodsboro family.”

Radio Silence added:

“Working with such a wonderful and talented family of creators — and in the lineage Wes [Craven] and Kevin [Williamson] so expertly built — has been the thrill of a lifetime, and we’re so excited to bring the next chapter in the Scream saga to life.”

Screenwriters Vanderbilt and Busick stated:

“Is this real life? Getting to collaborate once again with our friends on the next installment of the Scream story is more than we could have hoped for. We are overwhelmed that we get to continue to play in the sandbox that Kevin and Wes created. It is, as Ghostface would say, an honor.”

To date, the 2022 version of Scream has earned $62.6 million domestically and $106.7 million worldwide.  Combined, the franchise has brought in $710.7 million on a combined budget of $142 million. The 1996 original, written by Kevin Williamson and directed by the great Wes Craven, revolutionized the slasher genre with a meta take on too-smart teenagers that thought they were too clever to get killed. (They were wrong.)

No casting has been announced for the next picture, but then again, casting for new roles probably hasn’t taken place yet.

***Here’s where the SPOILERS kick in! Consider yourself warned!***

Expect Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox to return as Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers, respectively. It’s possible that past cast members will appear in flashbacks, the same way they did in the latest installment. It’s also likely that Melissa Barrera, Jenna Ortega, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Mason Gooding from the new cast will be back. If the next sequel continues to pay homage to the original trilogy, things may not go so well for the twins, Chad and Mindy.

With production taking place this summer, it’s entirely possible that the sixth Scream could be released around the same time next year as this past one was — mid-January. But that remains to be seen.

Are you excited to see another installment of this horror franchise?
