‘Marvel Zombies’ Bite Back In New Animated Series

They’re back! After making their debut in Marvel Studios’ first foray into animation What If…? this summer, Marvel Zombies are now set to return from the living dead in their own all-new animated series on Disney+!
Disney and Marvel made the announcement last week at their massive Disney+ Day event where they pulled back to curtain on several new projects that Marvel Studios has in the works for the streaming service. With this streaming platform at their disposal, Marvel has the opportunity to really fill out Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with many deep-cut characters that might not be the household names needed for a major box office release. It also gives them the chance to use characters and stories that might better benefit from the long-form storytelling opportunities that a television series would offer rather than a two-hour film.
The Marvel Zombies episode of What If…? jumped into the story pretty deep into the actual crisis. By the time we meet our surviving heroes, most of their former allies have joined the legions of undead zombies. The episode ended on a cliffhanger that saw Spiderman, Ant-Man (well, his somehow alive disembodied head anyway), and Black Panther arriving in Wakanda only to find a zombified Thanos in possession of several Infinity Stones. Needless to say, it didn’t exactly look like it was going to be a happy ending for our heroes.
While we first met the Marvel Zombies in What If…? this summer, there still stands a chance that this new series may not be a direct continuation of that story. Though the What If…? take on the fan-favorite comic book storyline that sees the heroes of the Marvel Universe turn into flesh-eating zombies was a hit with audiences, the logo used for this series announcement actually harkens back to the original 2005 comic book run from The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman. It stands to reason that this series could be a new type of monster entirely!
There is also the chance that the new series will do the impossible and pull off being both a new thing and a continuation of the What If…? storyline by way of being a prequel that further explores the early days of the Marvel Zombie apocalypse. Only time will tell us for sure, and we won’t know further story details until Disney and Marvel are ready to spill their guts (before eating them of course) about the new series.
Marvel Studio’s Marvel Zombies is executive produced by Bryan Andrews and Zeb Wells, with Andrews also taking on directing duties. Both of them previously worked on Marvel’s What If…? so the series definitely looks to be in good hands!
Marvel Zombies is set to premiere exclusively on Disney+ sometime very vaguely in the future! We will be sure to keep you posted as more details rise from the grave.
