Wait… this is a Netflix movie?!  For all their Red Notices and Army of the Deads, every so often, the world’s biggest streaming service seems to actually TRY with one of its original movies and this looks like this year’s annual “good Netflix movie.”

Don’t Look Up centers around a comet heading toward Earth and the effect that it has on the population.  As the trailer jokingly indicates, this picture hails from Adam McKay, the director of the Academy Award winners The Big Short and Vice… and Step Brothers and Anchorman.  Don’t Look Up seems to walk the line between prestige and comedy.  But will this be a winning combination?

The cast would certainly seem to indicate that!  Check out this Justice League of Acting: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Rob Morgan, Jonah Hill, Mark Rylance, Tyler Perry, Timothée Chalamet, Ron Perlman, Ariana Grande, Scott Mescudi (a.k.a. Kid Cudi), Cate Blanchett, and Meryl Streep.  Also look for appearances by Matthew Perry, Chris Evans, Hamish Patel, Gina Gershon, and Michael Chiklis.

Previously, McKay discussed the overall tone of Don’t Look Up, saying:

“It’s definitely not as dark as ‘Vice’.  ‘Vice,’ I’d say, really probably ended up being a drama with some comedy. But ‘Big Short,’ still, even though there’s drama in it – I would say [‘Don’t Look Up’] is a tad more of a comedy than ‘The Big Short’…I don’t know if the Ferrell movies, because they’re so uniquely Will Ferrell – but somewhere in between ‘The Other Guys’ and ‘The Big Short,’ I’d say, is where this one lives.”

DiCaprio plays Dr. Randall Mindy and Lawrence plays Dr. Kate Dibiasky, two low-level astronomers that discover a catastrophe is heading toward Earth and must warn everyone of the danger… except what happens when no one cares or believes the danger?  (Sound familiar?!)

Check out the trailer below:

Don’t Look Up will open in theaters on December 10 before arriving on Netflix on December 24.

Will you check it out?
