Doctor Who returns to screens this month in a Doctor Who-lloween episode after a pandemic extended hiatus. The BBC sci-fi/fantasy series dropped a trailer for its upcoming six-episode 13th season.

The teaser packs a lot into its 60 seconds. The Doctor (Jodie Whittaker) and Yaz (Mandip Gil) run into a lot of familiar faces as the Ood, Weeping Angels, a very classic series looking Sontaran, and the Cybermen all make appearances. Along the way, we are introduced to a few new faces, including new companion Dan (played by comedian John Bishop) and Jacob Anderson (Game of Thrones) as a recurring character named Vinder. Guest actors for the series include Robert Bathurst, Thaddea Graham, Blake Harrison, Kevin McNally, Craig Parkinson, Sara Powell, Annabel Scholey, Gerald Kyd, and Penelope Ann McGhie.

Along with a trailer, the BBC also released these images for the upcoming Doctor Who-lloween episode:

One thing that is different about the newest season is that it’s being billed as a “six-episode event” under the title FLUX. Flux will be one continuous story, much like the serials of the original Doctor Who series. The last time a whole season was used to tell one story was the 6th Doctor’s (Colin Baker) swan song in 1986, the 14 episode opus Trial of a Time Lord.

The upcoming season marks the beginning of the end of the 13th Doctor. Back in July, Jodie Whittaker announced her departure from the series in 2022. After the upcoming season, she will star in 3 specials leading to her regeneration. Similar to her friend, and 10th Doctor, David Tennant. Tennant starred in the series for three series from 2006 through 2008, followed by 5 specials in 2009/10.  Series showrunner Chris Chibnall will also depart the series in 2022. When Doctor Who returns for its next full series, sometime in late 2022 or early 2023, the original showrunner, Russell T. Davies, returns to lead the show.  Davies led the series’ 21st-century revival back in 2005. He will be overseeing the series as it celebrates its 60th anniversary in 2023.

Doctor Who returns on Halloween, October 31 on BBC, and BBC America.
