Michaela Coel has been cast in an undisclosed role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. Coel is a British actress/writer/producer/director/singer, who is best known for creating the comedy series Chewing Gum (2015–2017), for which she won the BAFTA Award for Best Female Comedy Performance; and the BBC One/HBO Max comedy-drama series I May Destroy You (2020) for which she won the British Academy Television Award for Best Actress in 2021. She is also nominated for Emmys for I May Destroy You in the categories of Lead Actress, Writer, and Director.
Coel had a small role in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, appeared in two episodes of Black Mirror, including the Emmy award-winning “U.S.S. Callister,” and starred on the Netflix series Black Earth Rising and Been So Long.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is now filming, so Coel was probably cast a long time ago, but this is the first time that it has been reported. Details are being kept under wraps, but of course, the biggest question regarding this sequel is how will it address the death of leading man Chadwick Boseman, the hero of the first movie and co-star of Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War, and Avengers: Endgame.
Director Ryan Coogler, who helmed the first Black Panther, has returned to handle the sequel. Reportedly, from the first film, the returning cast includes Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Martin Freeman as Everett K. Ross, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Winston Duke as M’Baku, and Angela Bassett as Ramonda. Last month, it was rumored that Mexican actor, Tenoch Huerta had been cast as Namor the Sub-Mariner, but so far that has not been confirmed. Filming began in Massachusetts, but will likely also take place elsewhere.
Nothing about the plot is known at this time.
