‘Gotham’s Victoria Cartagena Gets A Second Chance At Playing Renee Montoya On ‘Batwoman’ S3

Victoria Cartagena is getting a second chance at playing fan-favorite Gotham City police detective Renee Montoya. After portraying the character on Season 1 of FOX’s Gotham, Cartagena will play her once again on Season 3 of The CW’s Batwoman.

Cartagena made the announcement on Twitter, writing:

“I guess #Reneemontoya and I have some unfinished business.  So very excited to join this new group of talented artists, writers & crew who are doing their thing over here! They have welcomed me wholeheartedly! Grateful, humbled, hype AF…”

I guess #Reneemontoya and I have some unfinished business❤️ So very excited to join this new group of talented artists, writers & crew who are doing their thing over here! They have welcomed me wholeheartedly! Grateful, humbled, hype AF… #batwoman #fullcircle https://t.co/eeNCmptT7v

Below is a description of how Montoya will be depicted on Batwoman:

“A former GCPD officer, she left the force when she could no longer stomach the corruption inside the GCPD.  She now runs the ‘freaks division,’ which hasn’t seen a lot of action… until now. Righteous and pragmatic, and LGBTQ+, she’s a woman with a very personal (and mysterious) mission to help clean the streets of Gotham in the right way, by whatever means necessary.”

Montoya’s inclusion on Batwoman makes sense, although it comes a little late if you are a fan of the comics. In DC continuity, Montoya and Kate Kane were lovers at an undisclosed point in the past, before Kate debuted as Batwoman.

However, Kate Kane is no longer part of the Batwoman TV series, due to Ruby Rose quitting after the first series. Yes, Wallis Day portrayed an altered version of Kate, but it has been stated that her story ended with Season 2, with the focus going forward being strictly on Javicia Leslie’s Ryan Wilder.

Season 2 ended with the weapons belonging to all of Batman’s villains being released to the world.

Showrunner Caroline Dries previously stated:

“The tease we’re [giving] the audience is, ‘These are loose out in the wild.’ So anyone can literally come and pick them up.  So it will be a combination of people who come and pick them up and the villains themselves and derivatives of those villains. So Batwoman definitely has a huge problem next season.”

In addition to Cartagena, Batwoman is adding Robin Givens in the role of Jada Jet, the CEO of Jet Industries.  This isn’t a character from the comics, so fans speculate that she will turn out to be Ryan Wilder’s birth mother.
