Lily Collins To Play ‘Polly Pocket’ With Lena Dunham Writing And Directing

Lena Dunham is staying in touch with her inner Girl, as she is attached to write and direct a theatrical film based on Mattel’s longrunning plaything, Polly Pocket.  Emily in Paris star, Lily Collins has signed on to play the titular character.  Collins will also serve as a producer.

The film follows a young girl who forms a friendship with a pocket-sized woman.  The film is a collaboration between Mattel Films and MGM, with Dunham’s company, Good Thing Going, also producing.

Dunham stated:

“I’m so thrilled to bring to bear both my love of this historic property and also my deep-seated belief that young women need smart playful films that speak to them without condescension.”

Collins added:

“As a child who was obsessed with Polly Pocket, this is a real dream come true and I can’t wait to bring these tiny toys to the big screen.”

Mattel currently has a Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots movie in the works with Vin Diesel attached to star, and Barbie, with Margot Robbie starring and producing.  The toy company is also developing films based on the View-Master, American Girl Doll, and Hot Wheels brands.

Dunham is best known for creating the Emmy-winning HBO series Girls, which she starred in, co-wrote, and executive produced. She has since co-created and served as a writer on the HBO series Camping.  She has since created and directed the pilot for the new series Sharp Stick and the film Catherin, Called Birdie, based on the children’s novel by Karen Cushman.

Lily Collins has starred in The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones, Rules Don’t Apply (for which she was nominated for an Emmy among other honors), Okja, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and VileTolkien, and the Academy Award-nominated Mank.  She starred on the TV series The Last Tycoon, the miniseries Les Misérables, and Netflix’s Emily in Paris.  She will soon be seen in the second season of the latter.
