‘Silk’ Swings To Amazon Prime Video As A Live-Action Series

Cindy Moon a.k.a. Silk
Marvel Comics – Disney

Silk project from Sony, an extension of the Spider-Verse, has been rumored to be in the works for years now, but it was previously planned as a movie.  But it seems that perhaps the successes of Disney+/Marvel Studios’ WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and now Loki has convinced Sony that perhaps TV is a better outlet for some of the lesser-known characters from the Spider-Man pantheon.  Reportedly, Silk has been reworked as a TV series and will be distributed via Amazon Prime Video.

Watchman executive producer Tom Spezialy recently signed an overall deal with Amazon and it appears that Silk will be his first major undertaking.  He will executive produce and act as showrunner.  Lauren Moon (Netflix’s Atypical) wrote the series and will also serve as an executive producer.  It was previously announced that Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and Amy Pascal would also serve as executive producers.

In the comics, Silk is Cindy Moon, a Korean-American hero who was bitten by the same radioactive spider that bit Peter Parker.  She developed many of the same powers as Peter, but can also generate her own webs and can even weave web claws.  Because of her connection to Spider-Man, she is able to use her “Silk Sense” to track him anywhere in the multiverse.

The character was created by Dan Slott and Humberto Ramos and was introduced in 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man#1.

Tiffany Espensen plays a character named Cindy in the Spider-Man movies, but to my knowledge, her last name has never been given.  Though it is widely reported that she is “Cindy Moon,” I don’t think it’s ever been confirmed.  So Espensen could star in this series, but there is some wiggle room if they want to recast.

An animated version of Silk is also expected to appear on the big screen in the animated Spider-Women film, alongside Jessica Drew and Gwen Stacy.  This is a planned spin-off to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, but there hasn’t been much news on that in a while.

Are you intrigued to see Sony’s Spider-Verse expand to television?  How do you think Silk and other potential shows could compare to Disney+’s Marvel offerings?
