Ava DuVernay’s DC Adaptation Joins The CW’s List Of Comic Book Series

The live-action adaptation of DC Comics’ Naomi got a series order from the CW network, where it will join several other comic book TV series. It was announced by the network on Monday.

Naomi tells the story of the eponymous teenager who discovers she has superpowers and how her whole world gets turned completely upside down. Several worlds. Naomi McDuffie’s journey takes her from her small northwestern town to the heights of the Multiverse. When a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins. What she discovers challenges everything we believe about our heroes.

Naomi is written and exec produced by filmmaker Ava DuVernay (When They See Us, A Wrinkle In Time) and Arrow writer/co-EP Jill Blankenship.  Kaci Walfall stars as Naomi. The cast includes Cranston Johnson, Alexander Wraith, Mary-Charles Jones, Barry Watson, Mouzam Makkar, Daniel Puig, Camila Moreno, Will Meyers, and Aidan Gemme.

Naomi was created by Brian Michael Bendis, David F. Walker, and Jamal Campbell in 2019 and appeared in her eponyous series from DC Comics as part of the Wonder Comics imprint. She was named, in part, after comic book and animation legend Dwayne McDuffie, who created Static for Milestone. McDuffie passed away after complications from heart surgery in 2011.

Naomi wasn’t the only series news coming from the CW today. The network passed on the Black Lightning spin off Painkiller. However the series may find another home, perhaps on the cable streamer HBO Max. It also ordered a new pilot for PowerPuff Girls live action series. Also coming is a reboot of 4400, the 2000s sci-fi series. It received a straight-to-series order. The CW announces its 2021 fall schedule and 2022 midseason programming this Tuesday.
