The CW’s live-action pilot adaptation of The Powerpuff Girls, simply entitled Powerpuff, may have found its main antagonist in Nicholas Podany, who will portray Mojo Jojo Jr.

Joseph “Jojo” Mondel Jr. – As a kid, the nerdy, power-hungry, insecure JoJo was obsessed with The Powerpuff Girls, despite his father’s grudge against them. As an adult, JoJo finds his sweetness and rage in constant battle.

Mojo Jojo was the archenemy of the Powerpuff Girls in the original cartoon, after starting as Professor Utonium’s chimpanzee lab assistant. In fact, he inadvertently caused the creation of the Powerpuff Girls and mutated himself in the process.

Presumably, Junior will also be a chimp, which begs the question of how he will be depicted on the show? Motion capture? Completely CGI with Podany providing the voice?  Somehow human?

Podany is a Juilliard graduate (and now he’s playing a chimp?!) who starred as Albus Potter in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. He has also appeared on The CW’s Hart of Dixie and Netflix’s Archive 81.

Powerpuff picks up with Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup as disillusioned twentysomethings. Resentful over losing their childhoods to their crimefighting careers, will the girls resume their super careers when the world needs them again?

Chloe Bennet has been cast to play the leader of the Powerpuff Girls, Blossom.  Dove Cameron will play the perky Bubbles, while Yana Perrault will portray the aggressive Buttercup.  Donald Faison has been cast as their father, Professor Drake Utonium.

Powerpuff will be written and executive produced by Heather Regnier (the Veronica Mars reboot) and Diablo Cody (One Mississippi). Greg Berlanti and Berlanti Productions banner partner Sarah Schechter and CW TV president David Madden will also serve as executive producers.  The characters were created by Craig McCracken.

So far, Powerpuff has just been ordered as a pilot, but should it be picked up, it could air on The CW as soon as this fall.

What do you think of the casting so far?
