Just days ago, STARZ announced that American Gods, based on the novel by Neil Gaiman, had been canceled after its recently completed third season, but that there would be a follow-up to resolve that cliffhanger and to complete the story from the book. This possible follow-up will be either a TV movie or a miniseries.
Gaiman took to Twitter to assure fans that American Gods would continue, but it seems just not at STARZ:
It’s definitely not dead. I’m grateful to the team at @Starz for the American Gods journey so far. Fremantle (who make AG) are committed to finishing the story that began in episode 1, and right now we’re all just waiting to see which way forward is best, and who it’ll be with. https://t.co/Yw90PvIvGf

Additionally, a spokesperson for Fremantle stated (via Deadline):
“Fremantle is committed to completing the epic journey that is American Gods, one of TV’s most inclusive series with the most amazing fans across the globe. With Neil Gaiman and this fantastic cast and crew, we are exploring all options to continue to tell this magnificent story.”
RUMOR has it that the follow-up will wind up at either Netflix or Amazon Prime Video. Netflix is the home to the upcoming adaptation of Gaiman’s Sandman comic book, so it has an established relationship with the writer. However, Amazon already currently carries American Gods everywhere outside of the U.S. It was also the home to Good Omens, the adaptation of the book that Gaiman co-wrote with Terry Pratchett.
At the time of the cancellation, a spokesperson for STARZ wrote:
“Everyone at Starz is grateful to the dedicated cast and crew, and our partners at Fremantle who brought author and executive producer Neil Gaiman’s ever-relevant story to life that speaks to the cultural climate of our country.”
Season 3 of American Gods starred Ricky Whittle, Emily Browning, Yetide Badaki, Crispin Glover, Bruce Langley, Omid Abtahi, Demore Barnes, Ian McShane, and Ashley Reyes. Charles H. “Chic” Eglee served as showrunner.
Are you a fan? Are you happy that the American Gods story will continue?
