San Diego Comic-Con Special Edition Schedule Is A Real Turkey

San Diego Comic-Con logoSo after a year of Covid, geeks around the world have been denied so much. Movies like Black Widow and Wonder Woman 84 have been delayed or changed to streaming (or both) and, of course, there have been no large gatherings which mean no Comic Cons. The grand-daddy of all conventions, San Diego Comic-Con, didn’t take place for the first time in 50 years in 2020.

But as things have slowly been returning to normal, as the vaccines become available, comic fans and cosplayers have been waiting to suit up and get back to convention centers around the country. Fans, hoping that this summer would be different, were disappointed when SDCC announced another three-day Comic-Con@home virtual event will take place July 23-25.

But now plans for a “Comic-Con Special Edition” have been announced for November. According to a press statement:

“It is our hope that by Fall conditions will permit larger public gatherings. Comic-Con Special Edition will be the first in-person convention produced by the organization since Comic-Con 2019, and the first since the onset of the global pandemic COVID-19. The Fall event will allow the organization to highlight all the great elements that make Comic-Con such a popular event each year, as well as generate much-needed revenue not only for the organization but also for local businesses and the community.”

David Glanzer, a spokesperson for San Diego Comic-Con, added:

“Hopefully, this event will shore up our financial reserves and mark a slow return to larger in-person gatherings in 2022”

Sounds great right?  Well… it turns out that this Comic-Con Special Edition falls on November 26-28… which just happens to be Thanksgiving weekend.

Fans will now have to decide between waiting in line for Hall H or seeing friends and family over turkey dinner. Reaction from across the industry, and from fans, has been mixed, to say the least. Some seemed to be excited to get a return, but others, especially industry professionals, were not as enthusiastic.

Star Wars, She-Hulk, and Death of Wolverine scribe Charles Soule made it known he does not plan to be in San Diego this Thanksgiving:

Spider-man, Howard the Duck, and Daredevil writer Chip Zdarsky had this to say:

Other than the dates, not a lot of information has come out yet. Tickets have not gone on sale, and no prices have been announced. Of course, they may be waiting to find out just how big an event they may hold.

So how about it? Will you be heading back to conventions as soon as they start, or will you wait a bit?
