Netflix has dropped the first trailer for science fiction thriller Stowaway, which stars Shamier Anderson, Toni Collette, Anna Kendrick, and Daniel Dae Kim. The film was directed by Joe Penna (Arctic, the upcoming series Release), and focuses on a group of astronauts facing potential death in space.

Here is the film’s official synopsis:

On a mission headed to Mars, an unintended stowaway accidentally causes severe damage to the spaceship’s life support systems. Facing dwindling resources and a potentially fatal outcome, the crew is forced to make an impossible decision.

Check out the trailer below:

Penna wrote the script with Ryan Morrison, with whom he also penned Arctic. That film was released in 2019 and stars Mads Mikkelsen. It received rave reviews, with a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Kendrick has a few genre adjacent projects under her belt like the Twilight Saga and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, but this is her first foray into full-blown science fiction. She explained what drew her to Stowaway (via EW):

“A production designer once told me, ‘never do a movie in a submarine or in space…  It was so simple and so lean, but totally compelling… the thing that feels really relevant is less the isolation of it and more that kind of problem-solving part of your brain that we were all engaging so vigorously in the first couple months of the pandemic.  Just that constant problem-solving of, ‘wait, okay, how do we fix this?’ And just when it seems like you’re onto something, there’s some very obvious fundamental problem.”

She further described being on the set:

“It was like being in a spaceship. It was so cool.  I know [Penna] wanted it to feel incredibly claustrophobic — and that was not hard!… There were times when we’d be about to start rolling, and Toni would close her eyes and just whisper to herself, ‘we’re in space, we’re in space, we’re in space.’  It would add this level of absolute terror and desperation.”

You can experience the terror and desperation for yourself when Stowaway arrives on Netflix on April 22.
