Sorry Jack, Nica’s back!
The long-awaited Chucky television series helmed by original Child’s Play creator Don Mancini is gaining some steam after many COVID-related setbacks on production according to Entertainment Weekly.
We have known since the series was announced that it would be a continuation, or at least exist, within the same universe as the original Child’s Play films which include Child’s Play 1-3, Bride Of Chucky, Seed Of Chucky, Curse Of Chucky, and Cult Of Chucky. After the absolutely bonkers ending of 2017’s Cult Of Chucky, it was all but guaranteed we would see more action in this world. And it looks like that will be the playground for the SyFy/USA series.
Fiona Dourif (Daughter of Chucky’s voice actor, the legendary Brad Dourif) made the last two films something truly special and unique. Detractors early on thought it was a form of stunt casting, but after seeing Curse Of Chucky, most everyone changed their tune.
Curse Of Chucky started the modern-day Chucky films in 2013, and some were initially unhappy as it seemed to be a straight horror reboot. It turned out to be a surprise sequel and it was incredibly well-performed by Fiona Dourif as Nica Pierce and carried the film on her shoulders. She returned in Cult Of Chucky and brought an entirely different side of Nica by the end of the film.
I am a longtime Child’s Play franchise fan, and even quite enjoyed the 2019 film. It has its detractors, but overall I found it to be a really fun modern semi-realistic take on the source material. The score by Bear McCreary and the killer doll being sympathetically voiced by Mark Hamill helped the 2019 film carve its own niche and the final act gave us some of the dark humor and chaos we have always wanted in a killer doll movie.
With Jennifer Tilly, Brad Dourif, Alex Vincent, and even Christine Elise returning to the universe in recent Chucky films and all confirmed for this 8-part series, the gang is back together and if rumors are true that Glen/Glenda is going to join, we will have a full family reunion that will undoubtedly be a bloody good time.
