Darkseid Reigns in ‘Zack Snyder’s Justice League’ Trailer

The last trailer for HBO Max’s Zack Snyder’s Justice League makes one thing clear.  Don’t mess with Darkseid. But in this version of the film, that is exactly what DC’s preeminent super team will have to do to save humanity.

Of course, that won’t be easy since Superman (Henry Cavill) is, you know, dead. The ominous voice-over reminds us that this reality has no Kryptonian or even any Lanterns (Green or otherwise) protecting the world. That seems to spell certain doom for all of the people who live on that Earth.  (Glad I live on this Earth with no giant invading aliens.)  Of course, even though there is no Man of Steel, the world has its heroes. It will be up to Batman (Ben Affleck) to rally them into a team and begin a new age of heroes.

The movie re-edit that started as a hashtag arrives in two days. Warner Brothers and HBO Max have listened and on March 18 they #releasetheSnyderCut. In case you have been off the internet for the last 5 years (and who could blame you), the Snyder Cut, officially known as Zack Snyder’s Justice League, came to be when fans were let down from the 2017 theatrical release of Joss Whedon’s Justice League.

Snyder had shepherded Warner Brothers’ attempt to create a shared cinematic universe, directing both Man of Steel in 2013 and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016.  He was credited with writing the story and producing Wonder Woman in 2017. Shortly before Justice League headed to post-production, Snyder had a family tragedy and walk away from his comic book magnum opus incomplete. The studio couldn’t wait, and they handed the film to Avengers director Joss Whedon.

Whedon remade the film in his own image,  making it lighter and taking out much of the connection to other films.  The result was a more standalone feature that wrapped everything up in a pretty nice bow but left room for a sequel. What we ended up with was a rushed C+ effort of a film. Just decent enough, but nothing to brag about for anyone involved. Shortly after, the #ReleasetheSnyderCut hashtag was born. And here it is.

Did we really demand a 4-hour super-hero movie that ends on a cliffhanger, with no plans to make a sequel? Well some of us did. And the early word coming out says the film is not half bad. You’ll have to check in later this week to find out what we think here at Geek Anything

Zack Snyder’s Justice League unites on March 18, streaming only on HBO Max.

In Zack Snyder’s Justice League, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad, and Darkseid and their dreadful intentions.
