The VKs are coming back for one last (?) frolic. Unfortunately, this won’t be another live-action musical film, but rather an animated special, Descendants: Royal Wedding. After a three-picture courtship, King Ben and Mal got engaged in Descendants 3. It was a safe assumption that they lived happily ever after, but Disney wants to give fans one last glimpse at the magical kingdom of Auradon.
The stars of the live-action movies will be back: Dove Cameron as Mal, Mitchell Hope as Ben, Sofia Carson as Evie, Booboo Stewart as Jay, Sarah Jeffery as Audrey, Melanie Paxson as Fairy Godmother, China Anne McClain as Uma, Jedidiah Goodacre as Chad, Anna Cathcart as Dizzy, Dan Payne as Beast, Bobby Moynihan as Dude the Dog, and Cheyenne Jackson as Hades.
Obviously absent is Cameron Boyce, who played Carlos. He sadly passed away in 2019 at the age of 20, due to complications from epilepsy. He died one month before Descendants 3 premiered.
According to Disney Channel:
“The absence of the character Carlos, played by the late Cameron Boyce, will be acknowledged in the storyline and Boyce’s memory will be honored in the telecast.”
It appears that rather than recast Carlos, the character will simply not appear. Then again, it looks like a few other cast members are also absent this time around.
The first Descendants debuted in 2015 and became Disney Channel’s top-rated original movie. The concept is that the Disney princesses and their princes moved to the glorious kingdom of Auradon, while the villains were banished to the Isle of the Lost. A generation later, four of the villains’ kids are allowed to leave the Isle and attend school in Auradon.
Mal is the daughter of Maleficent, Evie is the daughter of the Evil Queen (from Snow White), Jai is the son of Jafar, and Carlos is the son of Cruella DeVille. Among those they encounter in Auradon are Ben, the son of Beauty & the Beast, the rulers of Auradon, Audrey, the daughter of Aurora (Sleeping Beauty) and Prince Phillip, and “Plain” Jane, the daughter of Cinderella’s Fairy Godmother.
In Descendants 2, the VKs returned to the Isle of the Lost and faced off against Uma, the daughter of Ursula, Harry, the son of Captain Hook, and Gil, the son of Gaston.
Descendants: Royal Wedding will air on the Disney Channel sometime this summer.
