During AT&T’s investor presentation, Warner Brothers presented its upcoming slate of DC Comics-inspired movies and TV series, and included among them are two projects that were only reportedly in the works — Batgirl and Zatanna.
Batgirl has never been officially confirmed until now but is known to have been in the works since 2017. Joss Whedon, who went on to direct portions of the theatrical version of Justice League, approached DC about writing and directing a film based on the female Caped Crusader. During this time, Hailee Steinfeld and Lindsay Lohan both expressed interest in starring. Rumors surfaced that Whedon was struggling with the script and he ultimately departed in February 2018 Rather than scrapping the project, Warner Brothers hired Bumblebee‘s Christina Hodson in April of that year to handle the screenplay. Hodson has since also penned the scripts for Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) and The Flash, but this is really the first news regarding Batgirl in a few years.
This was conceived of as a theatrical movie, but it is possible that at this point, Batgirl could potentially swing onto HBO Max.
A Zatanna movie was first rumored to be in the works in late 2018. According to Collider, this has evolved into an HBO Max project and is most likely a TV series instead of a movie. No creators have been announced.
In April of last year, it was announced that J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot was developing a Justice League Dark series for HBO Max and in February of this year, it was confirmed that this was still on track. Zatanna is frequently depicted as a member of that team in the comics, so these two projects could be related and therefore Bad Robot could potentially be involved with the Zatanna series as well, but that’s just speculation on my part.
